TV Entertainment Evolution in India


After Independence in 1947, Our Country was struggling to get on its own feet. It was the need of the time to develop in every field. Entertainment in remote area was also a thing to pay attention to. Along with this, mass addressing to the public was also needed. So it was decided that All India Radio would be given the responsibility to start the Television telecast System. Here on AchhiBaat.Com (ABC) I am giving the evolution of television system in our country in a chronological manner. I hope the viewers of ABC will like this information.



Only Radio channels , No TV


First Experimental telecast of TV through antenna.


TV telecast started officially in Delhi .



Television services extended to 7 cities of India. Programs were mainly telecast by Doordarshan, which was a part of All India Radio (AIR)


Television  services separated from All India Radio. The telecast was done twice a day in the morning and evening. The programs included only health, agricultural, drama, music, dance and a few entertainment programs


National telecast was introduced. Colour television was introduced in the market. People started owning more and more television sets.


“Hum log “, “wagle ki duniya”, “buniyaad” and comedy serial “Yeh jo hai zindgi” were started.

Hindi feature film on every sunday and a musical songs “Chitrahaar” and “Rangoli” also started


Epic serials Ramayan and Mahabharat started holding the world record of viewership


Dish TV also named as “cable” started, eliminating the need of antenna gradually. In the beginning, DD and only 1 channel like Star TV,  Zee etc.


First DTH service started by Dish TV india. Providing 100s of channels.


First HD service channel introduced in India


Intenet based apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime hit the market Due to increasing popularity and easy availability of Internet services


Reliance Jio started providing 4g internet… And Jio TV, giving easy access to TV channels as and when required, making YouTube easy for general public.


Market flooded with apps and huge no. Of webseries exclusively on those apps.
